NOW HIRING a Youth Transitions Specialist:The Youth Independent Living Specialist is responsible for assessing the need for independent living skills training among students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 704 Plans. They develop and deliver skills training to groups of students including budgeting, cooking, personal hygiene, pre-employment skills, time management and more as need indicates. They collaborate with educators, families, and community resources and train these students to advocate for themselves which includes setting goals in their individual IEP's toward post-secondary transitions to employment and/or education/technical training.about sil:Services for Independent Living (SIL) is a non-profit Center for Independent Living dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities, seniors, and veterans to achieve greater independence and quality of life.   • Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' independent living skills within the school environment.
  • Develop, teach and/or facilitate essential life skills curriculum, including budgeting, cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, preemployment skills, and time management.
  • Provide training in navigating public transportation, accessing community resources, and utilizing assistive technology.
  • Provide drivers training to help prepare students to pass the learner permit exam and offer driving simulation training as needed.
  • Offer guidance in developing social skills, self-advocacy, and managing interpersonal relationships.
  • Advocate for students' needs and rights within the school system and the broader community.
  • Assist students in accessing and maintaining appropriate housing and employment opportunities.
  • Connect students with community resources, including healthcare, employment services, and educational opportunities.
  • Collaborate with educators, special education staff, job coaches, and other professionals to provide holistic support.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with students, families, and school staff.
  • Document students' progress and maintain accurate records.
  • Conduct workshops and informational sessions on independent living skills for students, families, and school staff.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote independent living programs and resources within the school system.
  • Work with the Employment Transitions Specialist to help with employment programming as needed.
Position requirements:
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in special education, Social Work, Psychology, or Rehabilitation
  • Counselling, or a related field, is required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with young people with disabilities or in a similar role within an educational setting is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and/or reliable on-demand transportation are required.
  • Certification as a Job Coach or willingness to obtain certification at the employer's expense is required.
