Description of WorkThe Seed Laboratory Supervisor's position coordinates daily and long-term activities and functions of the regulatory seed testing laboratory. This includes supervisory, administrative, and advanced technical work in directing and reviewing the work of laboratory personnel engaged in determining the purity and germination characteristics of a variety of agricultural, vegetable, and flower seeds.Oversees lab operations, workflow efficiency, and sample traceability. Maintains supplies, equipment, and calibration records. Establish policies to support a professional and stable work environment. Enhances management and technical skills through targeted training.This requires the interpretation and application of several laboratory procedures and evaluations as they correlate to the AOSA (Association of Official Seed Analysts) Rules for Testing Seeds. All testing is conducted in accordance with established official procedures and guidelines as they relate to the North Carolina Seed Law and Rules and Regulations.This position not only serves as the laboratory supervisor but represents the Department of Agriculture as a technical expert concerning seed analysis on a local and national level. Provides timely responses to stakeholders, develops seed lab seminars in coordination with leadership, and organizes team-building events for seed analysts. Expands industry engagement by consulting with key contacts and maintains transparent communication with supervisors through regular reporting.This position must be able to perform tasks which involve dexterity of the hands and the ability to visually analyze small seeds sometimes through a microscope. When there are large volumes of seed samples to analyze, this position may be required to assist with the purity analysis and germination evaluations which require long periods of sitting..The N.C.   • Experience in leading and instructing laboratory personnel in day-to-day work, human resource issues, and training of new employees and current employees.
  • Knowledge of data collection and management for seed analyses, laboratory equipment maintenance & calibration, and quality checks and assurances as it relates to laboratory processes, along with a general knowledge of state seed laws and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with seed producers, seed dealers, and the public in written and verbal communications as well with laboratory staff, field staff, and upper management.
  • AOSA Certified in both purity and germination, either a CSA or the equivalent or the ability to obtain this certification within the first twelve months of employment.
  • Associate's degree in horticulture, botany, crop science, agriculture, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in seed testing, seed regulation or a related area of seed production or marketing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsYou may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
