Facilities Management at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the Multicraft Apprenticeship Program. This highly regarded Apprenticeship Program began in 1982 and was the first of its kind initiated by a state agency. This unique program provides an opportunity to gain experience in a craft occupation while working full time at UVA. Apprentices support Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, and reliable maintenance and service to the University’s facilities. The Apprenticeship Program’s multi-craft track trains these employees to become skilled Maintenance Mechanics, licensed Electricians, Plumbers, or HVAC Mechanics to support new construction and the maintenance of equipment and systems for the university community.Selected candidates are hired into a one-year restricted position, which can be renewed annually based on individual’s performance. Interim milestones for demonstrated progress on skills development will be provided. The University of Virginia provides all training and supplemental courses.Through extensive training, apprentices gain foundational knowledge across multiple craft occupations. Apprentices learn through a combination of on-the-job training and related technical instruction, which is completed outside of work hours. Apprentices are trained in workplace safety and health for the construction and maintenance environment as well as behavioral competencies to further their career. The University covers the cost for all tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and uniforms. This year candidates may enter the program in a pre-designated Plumber occupational track. Candidates will complete the program with certificates of completion for the job titles of Maintenance Mechanic and Plumber. Preference will be given to those with plumbing related experience. For apprentices who do not predesignate in the Plumber occupational track, a collaborative assessment will occur towards the end of year two of the apprenticeship program to determine which of the specialty craft occupations (Plumber, Electrician or HVAC Mechanic) is the best career path for the employee. The apprentice will then get to choose which of these specialty tracks to pursue for the last two years of the program. All applicants will be interviewed [via phone screening] to assess the applicant’s employability skills including, but not limited to, initiative, problem-solving skills, teamwork, leadership presence, and a commitment to equitable and inclusive thinking. To visit the Facilities Management website for information about the program, please click here - .Working environment and conditions include:Employees will be required to lift various weights up to 50lbs. and climb ladders and stairs to complete jobs.
