Under close supervision and/or following standard procedures, provides routine assistance to pathologists, residents and pathologists’ assistants working in the surgical pathology suite, in performing autopsies and assisting in general departmental functions. Maintains the surgical suite and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and performs other duties as assigned; occasionally may be required to maintain morgue if diener is not available. Performs surgical pathology examinations, including gross dissections, photography, etc., under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Pathology, attending pathologists and pathologists’ assistants. The Surgical Pathology Assistant is assigned to the surgical pathology suite to perform autopsy functions.Responsibilities:
Processing surgical pathology specimens including properly fixing, accessioning, cutting, photographing and sectioning of surgical specimens. Works closely with pathology assistants, residents and medical students. Keeps surgical area clean and supplies with appropriate instruments and supplies; files slides when necessary.Assists in various research projects under direct supervision of a staff pathologist, pathology assistant or resident.Assists pathologists, residents, and pathologists’ assistants in completing autopsies, lifting bodies from the stretcher to the table and handling instruments such as knives, saws, scalpels, forceps, etc., in order that the pathologist/resident needs not to divert his/her attention from the field of study. This may include obtaining body fluid and tissue samples, removing organs from the body, placing organs and specimens in appropriate containers, storing containers in proper locations and assisting in gross specimen photography. Occasionally releases bodies to personnel authorized to receive them, When working in morgue, maintains morgue area in a clean orderly fashion.Transports and files surgical and autopsy slides and other materials necessary for the inter-departmental communication.Performs other duties as assigned.Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Bachelors degree in biology.Knowledge of anatomy in order to perform autopsies, dissect surgical specimens and process specimens for analysis and/or preservation.Knowledge of anatomic pathology computer system functions.Analytical ability to accurately identify specimens, interpret surgical accession slips, process specimens according to established procedures; maintains surgical instruments and related equipment.Mathematical skills to measure and prepare solutions and regents, order and maintain inventories.EXPERIENCE:Three to six months experience to become familiar with job routine and instruments and equipment used in performing activities.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Physical abilities to assist in lifting and positioning bodies.Works in the morgue and surgical pathology suite where there is exposure to noxious odors, infectious materials, toxins and other hazardous substances.Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: NoneBrown University Health is an Equal Opportunity employer.
