Duties include providing lead direction for all Summer Camp Jr Leader and Summer Camp Leader staff. Will help to plan, implement and lead daily recreational activities for up to 100 children, ages 5-12 attending our full day camp program, Camp KHAOS (Kids Having An Outrageous Summer).2024 Hourly Wages:Summer Camp Director: $18.27 - $22.39 per hour.Status: Extra-hire part-time variable-hour positions with no benefits other than those mandated by law. Hours vary from 0 to 39 hours per week depending on program needs and are from June through the end of August.Timeline
  • Successful applicants should expect an interview sometime between April and May. This is subject to change.
  • If hired, applicants should expect to attend training the following days for training (dates are subject to change):
  • June 17th or June 18th for CPR Training
  • June 20th and June 21st for Orientation
  • Camp KHAOS (full day ages 5-12 camp) runs 6/24/2024 through 8/30/2024 at the Des Moines Field House.
  • If hired, shifts could be from 6:30am-1:30pm or 11:15am-6:15pm.
Nature of WorkReporting to, Recreation Coordinator, Assistant Recreation Manager, or Recreation Manager, Recreation Leaders perform a variety of indoor and/or outdoor recreational activities and assignments in primary support of Camp KHAOS summer day camp, special events and other City programs as needed. Work hours vary based upon program and event schedules.Camp Directors provide lead direction to the Summer Camp Jr Leader and Summer Camp Leader staff. Camp Directors plan, implement and lead daily recreational activities for up to 100 children, ages 5-12 attending a full day camp program, Camp KHAOS (Kids Having An Outrageous Summer). These are summer positions, generally lasting from mid-June through the end of August. As a representative of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Senior Services, a uniform will be provided and must be worn during working hours.Essential Functions
  • Oversees Summer Camp Jr Leaders and Summer Camp Leaders when organizing, teaching, leading, and stimulating interest in a variety of activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, nature-oriented activities, competitive and noncompetitive games, contests, sports and songs.
  • Supervises and actively participates in group activities and serves as a positive role model for participants at all times.
  • Assists in planning and leading staff trainings.
  • Assess situations of participant behaviors and implements behavior management techniques as needed.
  • Keeps routine records and drafts written reports.
  • Performs light maintenance duties such as cleaning, vacuuming and mopping.
  • Ensures department services are provided with exceptional customer service and highest ethical standards.
  • Drives City vehicles on City related business and transport participants as necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Supervises children and/or teens on excursions.
  • Maintains a professional image and positive attitude at all times.
  • Maintains an understanding of department programs and services.
  • Understands, adhere to, and enforces departmental and program procedures, confidentiality guidelines, emergency procedures and health and safety standards for all participants and staff.
  • Attends meetings/training as required.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative, effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the general public using principles of good customer service.
  • Reports for scheduled work with regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to being assigned to work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, equalize peak work periods, or balance the workload.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with children and adults when enforcing rules and regulations in a recreation setting.
  • Knowledge of youth and adolescent behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to recognize and correct safety hazards.
  • Ability to effectively plan, schedule and supervise programs and participants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact and play with program participants through games and athletic activities.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds in order to lift small children and arrange room equipment.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, direct, and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in high paced environment.
  • Ability to deal with participants and parents with poise and tact in sometimes stressful situations.
Job ClassificationsPositions in this job classification series are flexibly staffed depending upon qualifications upon hiring with advancement to higher levels as recommended by the department:
  • Summer Camp Director - This is the supervisory level in the job series, performing all duties of Summer Camp Jr. Leader and Summer Camp Leader, while providing direction to the supervision of Summer Camp Jr Leader and Summer Camp Leader staff.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Summer Camp Director - Must be 18 years of age or older. High school graduate or GED and two years of experience as a Summer Camp Leader or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Educational background in recreation, education, or child development is preferred. Experience in planning, implementing, and supervising recreation and/or educational activities for children is preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR/AED Certification within 30 days into employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Employment contingent upon passing a criminal history background check.
  • For Summer Camp Director, must have a valid Washington Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
  • Responsible for own transportation to and from various job sites.
  • Because of the known effects of tobacco use, the City of Des Moines does not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities
  • Indoor and outdoor work environments. Outdoor environment can include uneven and unstable walking surfaces, tripping hazards, and inclement weather conditions. Occasional travel to off-site locations is required. Hand-eye coordination and fine-manipulation skills are necessary to operate computers and a variety of office machinery. The position also requires the ability to speak and hear to exchange information, sit for extended periods of time, bend and stretch to retrieve and maintain files and program supplies, and lift up to 50 pounds.
