You're part of Deschutes.The Head Brewer – Non-Alcoholic Production is responsible for the management, development, and successful execution of all non-alcoholic brewing operations. This position works across departments to ensure successful development and scale of new non-alcoholic beers, as well as successful production of existing non-alcoholic beers. The Head Brewer creates a positive, motivating work climate by envisioning and advocating for positive change and supports the company mission statement and strategic focus by serving as a model for Deschutes Brewery's culture and core values.What You'll be Doing:
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and communication across the business by creating cross-functional teams, developing others, and continually educating the teams on process changes and equipment.
  • Provides performance management of the brewing team within the scope of non-alcoholic beer production. Participates in interviewing, selecting, onboarding, and mentoring of staff.
  • Creates Standard Operating Procedures and safety protocols surrounding the Brewvo process (in collaboration with external partners as needed). Creates, validates, reviews, approves, and communicates these changes.
  • Assures reliable non-alcoholic brewing operations by supervising day-to-day production, brewing, cellaring, and alcohol removal operations.
  • Accountable for wort production, fermentation, cellaring operations and managing waste streams.
  • Collaborates with production and personnel schedulers to ensure Brewvo production and personnel needs are met.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for contract brewing partners regarding recipe and non-alcoholic production concerns.
  • Works with the Innovation Brewing Manager to develop new non-alcoholic SKUs within a given scope and timeline. This includes recipe support, data management and finalizing products.
  • Works closely and effectively with the Quality Assurance department on defining quality specifications, executing trials, and establishing best practices. Serves as an active member of the Sensory Panel.
  • Responsible for Brewvo Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including oversight of progress, presenting updates to the brewing team and senior leadership, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Responsible for data entry, validation, and analysis to drive process improvement and set quality specifications for non-alcoholic beer operations.
  • Works closely with the maintenance and scheduling departments to define needed preventative maintenance (PM) schedule and ensures preventative maintenance is being completed.
  • Manages automation issues by creating action items and serving as the liaison between the Brewvo skid and the Brewing Operations Technology (BOT) team.
  • Maintains recipe system input, optimization, and maintenance within Joy of Brewing and Delta V.
  • Develops and optimizes the non-alcoholic data management and tracking systems.
  • Accountable for all test brew inventory, storage and sample management including order entry, safe storage, inventory control, and record keeping.
  • Works closely with Procurement on inventory management and ordering of unique raw materials for test brews.
  • Works with the Innovation Brewing Manager and Brewmaster on completion and management of a non-alcoholic brewing budget and the line items in the Brewing and R&D budgets.
  • Attends and participates in Brewing department leadership weekly meeting, R&D weekly meeting, and QA/Brewing bi-weekly meeting, and any Non-Alcoholic specific meetings.
  • Effectively plans, communicates, and measures progress towards goals related to the position responsibilities and holds self and team accountable for results.
  • Capital project authoring, justification, and presentation; defining vision and scope of projects; defining specifications; commissioning and training needs of new systems; and working in partnerships with other research facilities.
  • Develops strong external relationships which includes vendors, external contractors, and the brewing community.
  • Complies with Deschutes Brewery safety practices, policies and procedures and actively promotes safe work practices.

What You'll need for this Position:
  • Diploma in Brewing from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling, Bachelor of Science in Fermentation Science, OR any combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in similar sized brewing systems either through being fully trained in Deschutes Brewery's Huppmann brewhouse and cellars or from brew houses and cellars at another similarly sized brewery.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 or more years' experience providing performance management to direct reports.
  • 5 or more years' experience working in the brewing industry.
  • Experience with membrane separation technology.
