DescriptionThe Downtown Branch at Slover invites applications for a part-time Library Associate II position in its Youth Program Division. This position helps coordinate the spaces, services, and resources available to Slover patrons, ages 0-19+.Success in this position draws on the incumbent's competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations, collaborating with senior leadership and community partners on holistic strategic planning initiatives, and practicing sustainable resources management within available means.Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $41,775 - $48,041Essential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to:
  • Provides excellent customer service by assisting children, teens, and families with basic reference questions, technology support, and recommending age-appropriate reading materials.
  • Plans, develops, and delivers engaging children's and teen programs such as Storytimes, educational workshops, and creative activities that support literacy and lifelong learning.
  • Collaborates with staff to create inclusive and innovative events for youth and families, including seasonal celebrations and STEM-based activities.
  • Designs and sets up engaging displays and promotional materials to highlight youth collections, programs, and library resources.
Assists with collection development for children's and teen materials by reviewing professional sources, identifying gaps, and recommending new titles that reflect diverse voices and interests.Plans and coordinates support services for the program area.Education/ExperienceWork requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.Three years of experience in library, research or related services, including supervisory and/or management experience.Additional Information & RequirementsWork Hours: This position is up to 20 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs and can be between the hours of 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.This position will require flexibility to work weekend and evening schedules.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
