- Collect samples; complete tests; record and report data on boiler water, feed water, circ water, condensate, treated water, HVAC, closed cooling water, coal, oil, air, flue gas, steam, organic and inorganic wastes, and miscellaneous materials, as assigned.
- Recommend initiation, discontinuation, or alteration of chemicals and change in feed rates used in plant systems. This is used to protect, improve efficiency, and insure proper plant chemistry is maintained and/or improve output of each system.
- Inform the shift supervisor of boiler blow down requirements and drum pressure limits for safe operation of the turbine/boiler systems.
- Perform testing of pond and runoff water samples to ensure compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state permits.
- Operate and calibrate water panels; keep instrumentation reagents within proper level; assist in maintaining these panels; in order to provide continuous and accurate monitoring of water panel samples.
- Check the performance and operation of the water treatment equipment on a regular basis and assist operations and maintenance personnel in the maintenance of water treatment equipment.
- Assist in locating and making condenser tube leak repairs; inspecting boiler water; feedwater, circ water and condensate systems; provide detailed reports and recommendations relative to those inspections.
- Assemble and disassemble D.A. heater trays; adjust D.A. heater spray nozzles, regenerating and operating demineralizers and condensate polishers; and add or replace resins and other filter media.
- Perform general cleaning duties to maintain the working areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in chemistry and 1 year of lab technician experience; or
- 2 years of college chemistry and 3 years of lab technician experience, of which 2 years must have been as an apprentice laboratory technician; or
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 5 years of industry related lab technician experience.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of laboratory techniques and instruments.
- Knowledge of math and chemistry.
- Ability to weigh/measure, conduct research, analyze data/reports, implement recommendations, direct others, and develop plans, procedures, and goals.
- May be required to work under pressure.
