Description :General Position Summary & Responsibilities:The New Steel Supervisor reports to the Recycling Facilities and Operations Manager and is responsible for ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental regulations. The New Steel Supervisor monitors and coordinates New Steel receiving, processing, and sales activities with a goal of optimizing efficiency of product marketing, product processing operations, product shipment and profit maximization. The incumbent is required to effectively coordinate New Steel processing activities with New Steel sales team, peers, and subordinate personnel. The New Steel Supervisor is responsible for: inventory management; sales coordination; utilization of personnel and equipment to maximize processing capacity; and shipping activities. The incumbent is required to purchase material needed to sustain efficient order fulfillment and processing. This position also requires the incumbent to be proactive and enforce process and quality standards to ensure that the New Steel material provided to consumers always meets or exceeds specifications.This position operates within somewhat flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the New Steel operation. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 AnnuallyEssential Functions:
  • Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S):
  • Ensures safe work practices and equipment are always used and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with company safety policies, OSHA and other regulatory guidelines. Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Creates H&S Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with Regional Safety Engineer(s).
  • Ensures all department employees receive timely safety and operational training and that the appropriate documents (signed acknowledgement forms) are prepared. Maintains employee training files per regional practice.
  • Assigns an employee to be on the Safety Committee and personally attends Safety Committee meetings on rotation with other managers.
  • Monitors safety program to reduce accident frequency within department, implements new safety ideas/procedures and establishes safety goals
  • Operational Performance & Best Management Practices:
  • Directs, evaluates, schedules and coordinates equipment and personnel to support daily New Steel operations, including positioning for processing, material processing, and loading of New Steel sales.
  • Creates and maintain a layout plan for all physical spaces assigned to New Steel processing and shipping. Identify work in progress and finished goods storage bins and equipment locations to ensure a proper workflow is achieved.
  • Collaboratively communicates and partners with Facilities and Operations Manager to ensure best practices are presented, reviewed, and implemented accordingly.
  • Equipment & Maintenance:
  • Inspects allocated department equipment to ensure all assets are working within stated guidelines and submits work orders to maintenance staff as needed or required.
  • Submits purchase orders as needed or required to maintain or enhance department operations.
  • New Steel Sales Management
  • Solicits current and potential customers to increase New Steel sales.
  • Assists customer in selection of products and writes orders for additional items needed.
  • Arranges for delivery to customer.
  • Invoices orders after shipment.
  • Keeps inventory control records current and places orders to replenish stocks
  • Completes daily sales summary and deposits cash receipts in bank.
  • Approves vendor invoices for payment.
  • Inventory & Quality Control:
  • Analyzed inventory levels against previous sales, ensuring inventory levels are maintained to maximize availability for future sales
  • Organizes all storage and processing areas to facilitate employee access and ability to visually manage inventory
  • Oversees material movement: monitors movements of each truck; coordinates deliveries at industrial accounts, prepares manifests for outgoing material; and completes associated administrative paperwork.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
  • Maintains accurate inventory reporting records and conducts physical inventory audits regularly with Financial Business Partner and observes perpetual inventory of unfinished and finished goods.
  • Forecasts and manages daily sales volumes to ensure New Steel profitability.
  • Administrative Management:
  • Monitors and maintains exempt and and/or hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
  • Monitors supervisory practices for self and direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts, as applicable.
  • Reviews performance of direct reports.
  • Interviews prospective production employees.
  • Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.
Specific Other Responsibilities (regional, location, compliance, etc.): * Performs special projects or completes additional assignments as requested.Internal Control Responsibilities:Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.Communicates upwards problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.Supervisory Responsibility:The New Steel Supervisor directly supervises a group of employees within the New Steel Department.Job Conditions:Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and some minimum travel is required. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Offsite work involves meeting in person with select customers and visiting other Schnitzer locations.Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:Ability to: lift and carry up to 70 pounds occasionally; Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing, and analyzing data figures and computer use.Qualifications:A High School Diploma or equivalent; High School or better level mathematical skills: minimum 3 years metal recycling industry experience. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.Thorough knowledge of New Steel Materials, product sales, good judgment, interpersonal communications; self starter; good organizational skills; ability to negotiate; past supervisory experience a plus.PLEASE NOTE: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
