Ideal candidate will have health physics, and/or radiation safety background and that have certified health physics certification.SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to
resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff
and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to
address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to
address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations
and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes
environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident
investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate
risk and solutions. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations
as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and
Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness
and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological,
Chemical and Laboratory Safety.JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Program Leadership Acts in the place of the RSO as necessary to include supervising
technical staff, attending meetings, making regulatory decisions, and having general
oversight of the program. Acts in the place of the LSO as necessary to maintain and
oversee the laser safety program.
Contributes to scientific discussions at department, institution, state and national levels
representing Facility’s position on radiation safety issues.
Supervises duties of a technician and student externs.
Compliance Assist in maintaining compliance with all local, state and federal
compliance guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations, technical
assistance.
Consults and assists applicable departments in developing, implementing and revising
written laser safety procedures for use of laser producing machines.
Program Support Consults and assists applicable departments in developing,
implementing, and revising written radiation safety procedures for using radioactive
material (RAM), radiation-producing machines, laser producing machines.
May assist engineers and scientists in design and/or evaluation of shielding for new
therapy facilities. If a CHP, may conduct shielding evaluations of diagnostic areas.
Oversees the authorized user program. This includes ensuring AU’s have proper
credentials and training, proper lab space and equipment, and provides a risk assessment
of associated hazards.
Coordinates and maintains the Radiation Laboratory Inspection program and conducts
audits of clinical areas to ensure compliance.
Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding the potential hazards of ionizing and
nonionizing radiation.Other duties as assigned.
