
Civil/Structural Engineer - Transmission Lines

- Responsible for the engineering and design activities related to transmission line design such as engineering analysis and design, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management
- Prepare project construction documents such as: plan and profile drawings; design drawings; engineering, material, and construction specifications; project schedules and bills of material
- Develop project design alternatives and corresponding cost estimates
- Design new transmission facilities with voltages ranging from 12 kV and 765 kV
- Utilize PLS-CADD to model transmission line design project.
- Conduct contractor bid and construction meetings and assist in ensuring that work activities are performed safely and in accordance with plans and established schedules, and in accordance with AEP policies, rules and standards, and in compliance with external regulations
- Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure project permit
- Provide leadership to facilitate project completion, to train and mentor other engineers, and to develop measurable work area goals and objectives
- Function as a project lead for transmission projects
- Coordinate work activities of others within the work group and department to complete transmission projects
- Provide training and guidance to lower level employees
- Initiate corrective action when substation project objectives are not being met
- Position will require occasional site visits
- Minimum two years of experience of transmission line engineering
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering (ABET)
- Master’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering (ABET) will count toward years of experience
- A PE License is required
- Work effectively with both internal and external customers, including Project Management, Substation Design, Distribution, Supply Chain and Right-of-Way
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to facilitate adhering to project schedule and budget
- Intermediate understanding of standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC and NESC
- Possess intermediate understanding of equipment, material, ordering, and bills of material for substation construction
- Possess ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment
- Demonstrate ability to work with others in supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary
- Demonstrate willingness and capabilities to assume leadership roles
