- Provides direct nursing care for specified patients, including appropriate supportive care for patients receiving radiation therapy, chemotherapy, blood components, fluid and electrolyte replacements, and other oncology treatments.
- Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs for new and ongoing patients determining the need for standard, urgent or emergent interventions. Utilizes oncology nurse driven protocols to manage cancer related side effects. Evaluates progress towards attainment of desired patient outcomes.
- Implements and/or modifies plan of care using assessment data, standards of care and evidence based practice inclusive of nursing care coordination, appropriate patient and family education related to the disease and treatment.
- Demonstrates effective on-going observations and reassessment of patient/family and their response to the interventions and changes in condition.
- Documents assessments and interventions in accordance with hospital policy and standards of care.
- Utilizes resources appropriately and follows facility guidelines for documentation and charging of medical supplies and equipment.
- Assigns or delegates tasks to designated support personnel based on needs and conditions of the patient, complexity of the task, predictability of the outcome and facility policy.
- Collaborates with new employees and peers to support orientation, training and development opportunities. Supports the profession of nursing through support for nursing student clinical activities, as appropriate.
- Maintains compliance with all hospital and department specific competencies and continuing education requirements.
- Other duties assigned by the manager.
Current and Active Basic Life Support Certification Through the American Heart AssociationPreferred Qualifications:ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Upon Hire Obtain an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Radiation Therapy Certificate within 6 months of hire IF 2 years of radiation oncology experience has been met.
If 2 years of radiation oncology experience has not been met then the ONS Radiation Therapy Certificate will be obtained within 6 months after the RN has met 2 years of radiation oncology experience.
Radiation Oncology RNs NEW to oncology must complete the ONS Cancer Basics Course within 90 days of hire
36 oncology-related continuing nursing education contact hours every three years unless an oncology national certification is held.
2 continuing education activities related to breast cancer annually.
