Some evening, weekend, and holiday work required.PurposePerform journey-level abatement work for the repair, containment, and abatement of asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials from buildings, structures, equipment, and systems in compliance with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and other regulatory agencies.Responsibilities
  • Perform full-containment activities to abate and dispose of asbestos, lead, mold, and other hazardous materials in support of campus construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
  • Perform operations and maintenance-level activities to abate asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials in support of campus maintenance and repair projects. Execute proper glove bag techniques and Resilient Floor Covering Institute-recommended work practices, as appropriate, when handling asbestos. Support zone maintenance shops and other departments in repair of campus facilities, including after-hours response to campus emergencies.
  • Oversee open order labor contractors during abatement operations. Advise non-Abatement Shop staff on proper procedures when encountering hazardous materials.
  • Assist in shop operations. Clean and maintain personal respirator equipment, HEPA vacuums, airless sprayers, pump-up sprayers, negative air machines, shop tools, and vehicles to ensure proper function. Maintain shop equipment and supply inventory.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in shop and at job sites. Comply with safety standards and policies. Drive University-owned vehicles in support of campus projects.
  • Maintain professional licensure requirements for training, physicals, and license renewals to ensure all credentials remain current and compliant with applicable regulations. Coordinate required actions with supervisor.
  • Perform all work in compliance with University, DSHS and other federal, state and local directives. Read, interpret, and work from drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions.
  • Submit notifications for proposed work and document work performed in compliance with all regulatory directives. Document labor and materials expended for each project; accomplish daily labor report and weekly timesheet.
  • Attend management-directed meetings and training. Perform other duties as assigned. Be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. May be required to work extended shifts. Wear proper PPE as work requires. Possess Texas Class "C" driver's license or ability to obtain one 30 days after becoming a Texas resident.
Required QualificationsHigh school graduation or GED. Three years of experience in asbestos abatement operations and ability to obtain DSHS Asbestos Abatement Supervisor's License within 12 months. Three years of experience in lead abatement operations and ability to obtain DSHS Lead Abatement Supervisor's License within 12 months. Possess a Mold Remediation Worker License or the ability to obtain one. Five years experience in construction of containments and full abatement operations. Current and qualified medical surveillance for asbestos operations, and current blood-lead baseline. Commitment to and compliance with organizational values, goals, and policies regarding customer service, job performance, and job-site safety. Before final offer can be made, successful applicant must provide a current driver's license and acceptable driving record for the most recent 36 months. Texas driving history will be confirmed online during selection process; applicant must provide out-of-state driving history, if previously licensed in another state.Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.Preferred QualificationsAssociates degree or graduation from vocational or technical trade school related to abatement operations or facility construction-renovation. Five years of experience in asbestos abatement operations with two years experience as a DSHS-licensed Asbestos Abatement Supervisor. Two years experience as a DSHS-licensed Lead Abatement Supervisor. Experience and current as a DSHS-licensed Air Monitoring Technician. Experience and current as a TDLR-licensed Mold Remediation Contractor. Basic knowledge of computer applications for word processing, calendar, email, and internet. Demonstrated ability to perform and communicate in a team environment with co-workers, supervisors, and clients. Experience working in a large university or commercial-industrial physical plant.Salary Range$52,500 + depending on qualificationsRequired Materials
