Our programs, like our 401(k) plan where we match up to 4% of your annual income, are designed to help you prepare and reach your goals for you and your family.We give you time to recharge: We offer our teammates Paid Time Off (PTO) so they can recharge and relax with family and friends.Position OverviewThe VP, Summit OpEx Academy is the chief architect of Summit Material’s operations excellence toolbox and organizational development curriculum.This role oversees the Operational Excellence Framework which includes coordination of assessment of each site against criteria or advancement through increasing levels of achievement. The position will partner with Operations Leadership and other members of the Operations Excellence Team to define program priorities, deployment approaches and skill development programs.The ideal candidate is an experienced operations leader with experience in teaching and application of a variety of quality management and continuous improvement methods.This role will support Operations performance and profitability improvement primarily through upskilling employees at all levels of site Operations teams and executive leadership. Success will be defined by the completion of skill development programs and the impact of those programs on operational metrics and business performance.This position reports to the Chief Operations Officer.Requires approximately 60% to 70% travel.Responsibilities
  • Define organizational capability development strategy tailored to support Summit Materials Operational Excellence initiatives.
  • Facilitate the design of Summit’s Operational Excellence Framework including strategic pillars for improvement, operational elements and organization capabilities for development, and administer implementation across the enterprise.
  • Develop a standard library of training materials for use across the enterprise.
  • Facilitate the development of expert skills within full time Operations Excellence roles through a train-the-trainer approach.
  • Coordinate with Operations leadership, Operations Excellence Leaders, and Human Resources to deliver training in Operations Excellence methods in concert with a portfolio of improvement projects and events.
  • Coordinate a mentoring program withing the Operations Excellence community, including acting as a mentor in Operations Excellence methods, safety and sustainability leadership, change management and matrix leadership.
  • Report on key performance indicators to assess organizational capability development and associated impact.
  • Work with external experts or organizations as needed to acquire and internalize targeted capabilities.
  • Facilitate cross-business communication of projects, events, and best practices
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent, relevant experience (materials manufacturing, cement, aggregates, ready mix and/or asphalt experience a plus)
  • 10+ year of experience in operations or related functional leadership, with a strong track record of continuous improvement project leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership.
  • Expert level skill in at least one relevant, well established continuous improvement methodology such as Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma and working knowledge of others.
  • Credible certification or equivalent credentials in one or more methods required. This may be waived initially, but must be completed within one year of assuming the role.
  • Strong business acumen with comprehensive understanding of manufacturing cost and performance management.
  • Detail-orientated with excellent organizational and communications skills.
  • Excellent leadership skills and organizational abilities. Strong influencing skills with demonstrated ability to lead in a matrixed organization.
