Summer Experience 2024Are you a high school or college student?Are you eager to learn about the construction industry?Summer Experience is designed for people 17+ years of age to work with SKMES over the summer and gain experience while discovering a variety of opportunities in the construction industry.We are taking applications through April 19th, 2024. There are limited spots available for each location.Steps & Eligibility:
  • High school or college students who would like to investigate working in construction.
  • Must be 17+ by June 7th, 2024.
  • Service department must be 18+ by June 7th, 2024.
  • Recommended by:
  • SKMES employee OR
  • Teacher, counselor, or administrator.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the work location.
  • Must be able to work Monday – Friday.
  • 7:00am – 3:30pm for Knoxville / Asheville/ Roanoke.
  • 7:30am – 4:00pm for Tri-Cities.
  • If under 18, parental permission is required.
  • Complete this application form.
How will we select participants:Should we receive more applications than spots available, we will use a ranking system to select the participants. Specific locations are listed at the bottom of the application.
  • Recommendation, priority given to those recommended by a SKMES employee.
  • Participation in CTE programs through your high school.
  • Availability to work.
  • Completeness to the questions on the application form.
Once Selected:
  • Must pass a drug screen and physical capacity examination. HR will make the arrangements with the student and parent (if under 18 years of age).
  • Must provide your own safety toe boots (composite or steel toe).
  • SKMES will provide or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as Hardhat, Safety Glasses, Gloves, and High-visibility vest and shirts.
  • Must be reliable and dependable – arriving on time at the job site.
Important Dates and Information:All applications must be submitted no later than April 19th, 2024.Participants will be notified of acceptance into the program by May 1st, 2024.Human Resources will work with participants in scheduling a drug screen and physical prior to starting.This is a paid day of orientation.Participants will attend orientation on Friday, June 7th at 8:00am.In addition to safety training and meeting with Human Resources, participants will be escorted to their work location and introduced to their Foreman in preparation for their 1st day on the job site.Participants will attend a Tools Boot Camp on Monday, June 10th.The Summer Experience 1st job site workday : ­Tuesday, June 11th.The final workday will be on Friday, August 2nd.You will be an employee of SKMES and will follow all rules and expectations, too in Safety, Timeliness, and Professionalism.
