Job DescriptionTennessee State University College of Agriculture is looking for a high-achieving researcher with a strong background in Microbiology/Bioinformatics/Food Science to join a new research group in the department of Food and Animal Sciences within the College of Agriculture.This is a full-time position with fringe benefits and available immediately for one year with a possibility of renewal for up to one year based on performance and continued funding.The successful candidate is expected to conduct research activities of USDA NIFA funded project “Screening and Identification of Potential Cyanobacterial Crude Extracts/Compounds against Highly Infectious Poultry Viruses and Bacteria”. Major activities are i) enrichment of cyanobacterial secondary metabolites via molecular modeling (molecular docking, molecular dynamics) tools; ii) cultivation of potential cyanobacterial spp., harvesting, preparation of crude extracts, and purification of compounds; iii) Enzymatic/biochemical assays and assessment of antibacterial activity. The successful candidate is also expected to publish papers, mentor students, assist/develop grant proposals and manage the laboratory under the supervision of the advisor.Tennessee State University complies with title IX and is an affirmative action employer.
Minimum QualificationsPh.D. in Microbiology/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Food Science or related fields.A strong theoretical and experimental background in culturing cyanobacteria/microalgae, screening and identifying antimicrobial compounds using high throughput in vitro assays (antimicrobial/enzymatic/biochemical).Analytical chemistry skills for extraction and characterization of natural products.Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to publish manuscripts.Additional SkillsPreference will be given to applicants with strong publication records, considerable drive and motivation, and excellent problem-solving skills.Knowledge or experience in bioinformatics tools; molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations.Cultivation, maintenance of animal/human cell lines, and conducting cell culture assays.Special Instructions to ApplicantsEmployment is contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check as mandated by Tennessee State University.Official transcripts for positions which require a post-secondary undergraduate degree, advanced degree and/or certification must be presented upon hire.An unofficial transcript may be attached in the “Transcript” section.You will be required to provide names and contact information for three references during your application to the posting.
