The Department of Student Life- Residence Life at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Night Staff Desk Manager.About the OpportunityThe Night Staff Desk Manager provides a customer service atmosphere at the entrances of a University Residence Hall while controlling access to residents and authorized faculty and staff to provide appropriate building safety and security.This position must have detailed knowledge of emergency procedures such as fire safety evacuation, bomb threats, medical emergencies/resources and by assisting other staff in responding to crisis situations and engaging in preventative activities such as checking and verifying Ids, perimeter safety checks, and roving the buildings.They will provide information and operational support for 2,200-2500 residents, 1-4 Graduate Assistants, and 15-30 Hourly Workers, university officials, university police concerning the utilization of residence hall programs, operational procedures for residence hall space/services. Coordinates night operations and access to an area of residence halls on the Downtown or Evansdale campus. Enforces policies, rules, regulations, and other community standards. Must have daily face to face and telephone contact with residents, Residence Life Staff, Resident Assistants, and Residence Hall Coordinators. Must possess computer skills, speak, read and write English. Assists in resolution of problems on behalf of and providing for the needs of students. Must possess ability to train, and coordinate schedules for undergraduate and graduate student employees.   • Serve as the primary contact for any/all security issues for the Residential Halls (2200-2500 resident students and approximately 40 student/staff members on the downtown, Sunnyside, or Evansdale area). Maintain daily contact with UPD and other University departments and staff as necessary.
  • Carry out residence hall procedures related to hall security when residence halls are open - checking and verifying student and staff ID's, verifying guest registration, conducting hall roves and checking perimeter doors as necessary. Keep appropriate staff apprised of any and all emergencies and respond to residence hall situations that might involve policy violations, emergencies and other community concerns.
  • Enforce all residence hall policies and community standards. Act as the lead in confronting policy violations. Submit detailed information reports of all such incidents.
  • Interact regularly with live-in staff and call upon them as necessary.
  • Coordinate the operation of the residence hall main desk. Ensure that student staff, Graduate Assistants, Conference staff (May – August) are providing appropriate customer service and maintaining security and procedural integrity.
  • Serve as information source for residence hall main desk areas, e.g. answer telephones, answer questions, access student directory.
  • Serve as the initial emergency contact as necessary (e.g. student illness, death, serious injury) by contacting necessary staff/agencies e.g. Area Advisor, Conference Manager (May – August), Residence Hall Coordinators, University Police, EMS and other staff.
  • Assist with administrative or facilities work when residence halls are closed for breaks, i.e., Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break.
  • Work primarily nights (August to May), evenings (May – August), and weekends.
  • Assist with Night Staff Publications
  • Assist the Residential Education Department with New Student Orientation in June.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required or equivalent. Clerical/Computer training beyond high school preferred.
  • Must be able to speak and write in the English language.
  • Must know English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions or equivalent.
  • Requires ability to make sound, independent, judgments and work autonomously especially given the shift and the likelihood of student behavioral issues, and related emergencies.
  • Basic office skills e.g. filing, typing, telephone skills, some computer skills, with a working knowledge of Word preferred.
  • Must be able to become familiar with all University and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Must possess ability to provide supervision and training to student workers.
  • Must have confrontational skills and the ability to exercise excellent judgment under stressful conditions.
