Shipyard Staffing is currently hiring for Shipfitters in Norfolk, VA.Shipfitter Job Description:
The Shipfitter must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to assemble, modify, layout, fabricate, repair, and install plates, shapes, and/or pipe to be used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship alteration and repair.A Shipfitter with approximately 4 or more years of experience laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting parts of structural metal products with the use of regular supervision while always adhering to industry safety standards.Qualifications.
  • Ability to gain access to military installations.
Physical Requirements.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
Essential Functions:
  • Positions align, fit, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
  • Verifies conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Tack-welds fitted parts together.
  • Lays out and examines metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
  • Locates and marks work-piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
  • Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
  • Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
  • Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
  • Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Measures, templates, cuts, and grinds components for foundations and other structural members.
  • Efficient use of material to prevent waste.
  • Advanced use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch).
  • Advanced reading, and interpreting of blueprints (successful identification of material types, parts, references, applicable views/details).
  • Advanced use of temporary attachments.
  • Advanced understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, chamfers, and bevels).
  • Advanced skill in the installation and removal of fasteners and rivets.
  • Correctly identifies base material types and thicknesses.
  • Advanced level tack welder in common shipboard positions (overhead, vertical, horizontal).
  • Intermediate tack welding in uncommon/ limited access positions (mirror, confined, heavy interferences)
  • Expert with an Advanced understanding of fitting operations (coping, straightening, carbon arcing).
  • Advanced knowledge of Erect and Set principles (identification/use of extra material, set to lines, etc.)
  • Advanced understanding of material fabrication.
  • Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application).
  • Able to solve job issues without the need for Supervisory approval.
  • Ability to read fit-up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)
  • Advanced use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills, etc.)
  • Advanced use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)
  • Correct setup of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.)
  • Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points).
  • Advanced use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles).
  • Advanced knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689).
  • Advanced knowledge of inspection standards (009-25, 009-06).
  • Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning fire watches, 35’ rule, etc.)
  • Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas.
  • Advanced knowledge of industry safety standards/training.
  • Adheres to industry safety standards.
  • Requires occasional supervision to accomplish work.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk, you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, and vertical ladders, and bend or stoop thru tight spaces. There may be the occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds.Environmental Conditions.This position works on the job site. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:
  • Hard Hat.
  • Ear Plugs or Attenuator.
  • Safety Shoes.
  • Dust Mask or Respirator.
  • Gloves.

  • The workmanship in tack welding.
  • The workmanship in fitting operations.
  • Understanding of metal fabrication processes.
  • Ability to solve job issues without the need for Supervisory guidance or approval.
