Teaches short technical courses in accordance with approved curriculum to maintain proficiency and to evaluate and develop new instructional techniques/courses.The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in heavy-duty propulsion systems, Cummings diesel, Allison transmission and hybrid systems. The preferred candidate will also have knowledge of transit HVAC systems, multiplex systems and knowledgeable in current diesel EPA after treatment systems, as well as suspension and brake systems.General DescriptionFacilitates the training of employees responsible for the repair, and maintenance of transit vehicles.This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Requires four (4) years of experience as a transit operator, or technician in heavy-duty truck or diesel vehicle maintenance or closely related experience; including two (2) years of lead work experience.Special Certifications and Licenses:Possess and maintain a Florida Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement for duration of appointment.Obtain Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) Third Party CDL Examiner Certification within 30 days of appointment, or at first offering of course following appointment. Must maintain certification for duration of appointment depending on area of assignment.Other Requirements:Ability to work varying shifts in a 24/7 operation (days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays) at multiple work locations as assigned.Preferences:

  • 6 Months+ Experience in a classroom or peer-to-peer setting as an instructor or as a one-on-one hands on mentor
  • 1+ years experience in curriculum writing and development
  • 1+ years experience and training on hybrid and/or electric bus system maintenance
  • 1+ years experience and training on diesel exhaust gas recirculation and emissions system diagnostics, troubleshooting and maintenance
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.Develops and administers training programs for employees responsible for the operation of transit vehicles.Assists in evaluating trainee performance; documents, counsels, hires, and dismisses new hires.Conducts classroom and on-the-job training to transit vehicle maintenance staff on topics including, but not limited to, basic and advanced electrical, programmed logic controls, steering/suspension and drive line, air systems including doors, ABS brakes and accessories, preventative maintenance, valve adjustment, engine tuning, and electronic fuel injection.Coordinates component manufacturer training and forklift training.Assists with unique problems in the shop and solving complex repairs; maintains and conveys awareness of safety at all times to employees.Maintains records for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) renewals; keeps records of training accomplished and posts sensitive data to OSHA, state and federal regulations.Attends various staff meetings; conducts interviews; prepares various handouts and “Stump Notes” to keep mechanics apprised of solutions to various trouble shooting and repair techniques.Performs related work as assigned.WORK ENVIRONMENTPhysical DemandsPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.Involves routine and frequent exposure to vibration, noise, fumes and/or noxious odors.SPECIAL INFORMATIONCompetencies
