We are filling 32 temporary jobs with staggered start dates from April to June.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESResponsible for various manual labor tasks within the Public Works Department including, but not limited to, work duties for roads, bridges, vegetation, sign, pavement markings, traffic devices and control, ferries, fleet, drainage conveyance, nuisance control, working with adult-in-custody work crews, park maintenance, environmental sites, landfill and transfer site operations.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork under the direct supervision of a supervisor, crew leader or lead worker who assigns work and observes performance to ensure conformance to department standards. At discretion of direct supervisor, may work independently for limited durations and/or on routine tasks.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDSupervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification. May aid in the instruction of peer employees.Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following
  • Performs traffic flagger responsibilities including setting up work zones and directing traffic in roadways.
  • Operates cars, pickups, light trucks, and tools such as chain saws, jackhammers, crack sealers, weed eaters, small tractors, power equipment, hand tools, portable radio, computer, etc.
  • Performs heavy manual labor as required, including digging ditches, cutting, and chipping brush, hand loading and unloading all types of materials, painting activities, safely removes dead animals from roadways, and litter clean-up.
  • Performs tasks in repairing road surfaces, asphalt tacking, crack sealing, raking and shoveling materials.
  • Applies traffic markings, traffic long-line painting, pilot vehicle operations, and performs sign manufacturing and maintenance work.
  • With other county staff, may work alongside corrections inmates.
  • As directed cleans vehicles, equipment, shops and grounds.
  • May work in uncomfortable and severe weather conditions for long period of time.
  • Works safely and follows all applicable safety health rules; responsible for reporting any unsafe condition to supervisor, crew leader or lead worker; expected to stop work when conditions are unsafe.
  • Participate in daily crew meetings, daily safety planning, and perform stretch and flex activities.
  • With little notice, may be assigned to alternative "report-to-work" locations.
  • Considered an essential employee during emergency conditions and with short notice, may be required to work alternative hours.
  • May be temporarily re-assigned to other department workgroups with alternative work locations and work schedules.
  • Provide great customer service, responding politely and respectfully when giving directions, or responding to inquiries from the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements for the PositionEXPERIENCE AND TRAINING * High school diploma, or equivalent; AND
  • Any combination of six months experience in controlling or directing traffic, performing semi-skilled road maintenance/construction work, exterior work that includes heavy manual repetitive labor activities, or other closely related areas or activities; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business. . * Regular status employees must be able to pass a criminal history background investigation; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this classification.
  • Dependent on work area assignments, some regular status employees may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, and a physical examination which includes agility evaluation by a county appointed medical doctor.

  • Dependent on work area assignments, regular status employees may be required to complete the following County trainings /certifications:
  • Work Zone Traffic Control (flagger);
  • Awareness and Limited Operations' Level Hazardous Material Response.
  • Forklift/Lift Truck.
  • Cash Handling.
  • FEMA ICS/ NIMS IS-100 / 700 Incident Command.
  • Employee development trainings.
  • This position is represented by a union.
  • This is a full-time temporary position, which is eligible for overtime.
  • Typical Roads Division Summer Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. or Tuesday - Friday Work Schedule dependent on work area daily assignment and needs of the department.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic tools use dependent on position assignments: working safely in traffic; recycling programs; and proper cash handling.
Skill in effective oral communication; reading comprehension; basic computer operations; ability to receive and understand technical and safety training; and completing daily reports.
Ability to understand and follow directions; exercise good judgment; perform heavy manual repetitive labor activities for extended periods of time including during adverse weather conditions; stand or walk long distances; operate simple machines and radio equipment; wear proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE); perform simple math functions; make change; and maintain good working relationships coworkers and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates a motor vehicle and maintains an acceptable driving history; stands for long periods of time; sits for up to 1/2 hour; walks about the work area; walks long distances; bends forward; reaches overhead; works in inclement weather conditions; performs heavy manual labor, lifts/pushes/pulls/carries up to 50 lbs.; loads/ unloads all types of heavy materials. Works effectively and safely around road maintenance activity noises; climbs ladders and scaffolds; works around smoke and dust; works with engine vibrations; possible risk of exposure to blood/body fluids; possible risk of exposure to exhaust fumes. Operates a keyboard; speaks clearly and audibly; uses rapid mental/hand/eye coordination; reads a 12-pt. font; distinguishes shades and colors; sees with depth perception; hears a normal speech level.PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
