Reports to: Director of Special Education Days/Dates: 187Primary Purpose:The teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will provide instructional support to students identified as deaf and hard of hearing in order to ensure a quality educational program that is based on federal and state standards as well as sound instructional practices.Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Deaf Education, EC-12
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of the unique communication needs of students with hearing loss.
  • Knowledge of various types of hearing loss, communication needs, and adaptive/assistive devices and equipment used by students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of basic sign language and the ability to instruct students to speak/understand sign language.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction at all grade levels.
  • Knowledge and ability to participate in the ARD process.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with campus teachers to assure that DHH students are able to participate in classroom activities with necessary accommodations.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience:
  • At least one year teaching experience working with students who are deaf or hard hearing.
Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with district staff on multiple campuses and parents to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee process for students.
  • Documentation of deaf or hard of hearing IEP goals through progress monitoring using district protocols.
  • Training and troubleshooting of hearing assistive technology equipment.
  • Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to complement the student's IEP.
  • Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
  • Ensure students who are deaf or hard of hearing receive needed Special Education services.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Conduct ongoing informal assessments based on students needs in communication, language, advocacy, and transition.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Provide staff development to campuses on hearing loss and hearing assistive technology.
Working Conditions:Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students.
