The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families. Preferred/Optional:Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.Marshfield Medical Center7 North-Surgical/OrthoRegistered Nurse-AcuteDEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION7 North is a 29 bed patient care unit within the department of Adult Medical Surgical Services. The unit provides inpatient-nursing care to patients utilizing a Synergy Model of Care. Patients can be admitted with Orthopedic, Urology, Plastic, Vascular, Wound Healing, and GYN-Oncology Surgical care needs, along with non-surgical medical treatment needs.Services Provided/Patient Conditions:Specific surgical patient diagnoses include but are not limited to:
  • Total joint replacement and non-traumatic fracture repair
  • Cervical, Lumber, and Thoracic Laminectomy, Diskectomy, Facetectomy and Fusions
  • Robotic & Radical Prostatectomy
  • Radical Cystectomy with Ileal Conduit
  • Bladder repair
  • Radical Nephrectomy
  • Nephrolithotomy
  • Vascular Bypass, Carotid Endarterectomy, Vascular Aneurysm Repair
  • Complex wound care and Skin grafting
  • Robotic & Radical Hysterectomy
  • Vulvectomy
  • Tumor Reductive Surgeries

  • General Medical diagnoses
Staffing Mix:Patient care on 7 North is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN’s and CNA’s. Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management via a shift management tool. Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift, or day to day, due to acuity of patients and availability of staff.A multidisciplinary approach is taken to meet patient needs. Therapeutic care is provided to patients through Physical, Occupational, Recreational and Respiratory Therapy services. Wound/Ostomy Nurse Specialists work to assist in the management of care for patients with complex wound healing needs. Spiritual support is available 24/7 from Chaplains and local ministries. Case managers and Social Workers assist in discharge planning, and linking patient’s to resources in the community. Registered Dieticians and Speech Language Pathologists assist in meeting nutritional needs. Operational support is provided to the department from Health Unit Coordinators and Decentralized Transport.Patient Population:The population cared for on 7 North ranges from early adult (20-29 years) and young adult (30-44 years), to middle adult (45-65 years) and geriatric adult (
65 years). Cultural needs are considered for Native Americans, Hmong, Amish/Mennonite, and Hispanic patients who account for a small percentage of our total patient population. Interpretative services are available to patients and caregivers as needed.Frequent Procedures:7 North staff is dedicated to providing nursing care and education to their patients and families. Clinical procedures performed frequently on the unit include:
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Anticoagulation therapy
  • Blood product administration
  • Management of venous access devices
  • Management of drains
  • Insertion and care of nasogastric tubes
  • Monitoring and management of oxygen therapy modalities
  • Wound/dressing care including staple/suture removal and wound vacuums.
  • Complex pain management- perineural nerve sheath catheters, epidural, and IV PCA’s.
