RC/Department: 4063 -ENG SVCES MEASRMNT-GAS BALANCE :KMIPosition DescriptionPrimary Purpose:This position will primarily be analytical in nature and will require investigative skills in order to identify, analyze and mitigate Lost and Unaccounted for Gas (L&U). This position will have responsibilities directly related to gas pipeline balancing and L&U management, including measurement data analysis and auditing, meter station and L&U investigations and L&U reporting. This position is highly collaborative in nature and works with and supports the Measurement Volume Processing and Technical Services groups as well as the upstream/downstream business groups outlined below. Ultimately, this technical position works to identify and resolve problems and inaccuracies in measurement information that have a financial impact on the organization.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide the Measurement Department, Field Operations and designated business groups with current and revised physical pipeline L&U reporting and information.
  • Analyze and investigate large losses or gains on physical pipeline balances and work with Field Operations and Measurement to resolve. This includes assisting the downstream business groups in tracking and resolving physical to contractual L&U variances.
  • Analyze measurement data for trends, looking for discrepancies and anomalies using historical trends and knowledge of other operational considerations.
  • Work with others within Measurement, Field Operations, Engineering, IT and the various downstream business units to help resolve measurement issues.
  • Work closely with the L&U Engineering team to identify and resolve L&U issues including measurement equipment and meter station investigations.
  • Coordinate and lead L&U meetings on a regular basis when required. Document discussions and action items according to department and SOX Control procedures. This includes compiling, presenting and facilitating discussion of L&U results and analyses with Field Operations, Measurement and at times, Senior Management.
  • Report accurate physical pipeline L&U information according to department procedures.
  • Create and maintain asset and operational balances as required.
  • Utilize skills and knowledge to analyze measurement data, identify measurement data inaccuracies, and work with others to interpret and resolve such inaccuracies.
  • Perform data auditing and analysis of Kinder Morgan and 3rd party physical measured points across the KM pipeline network.
  • Complete and assist with meter requests and setup in Kinder Morgan’s Measurement Volume Processing application (VMA).
  • Assist with VMA Enhancement projects, system testing, documentation and training. This includes working with IT when necessary to help resolve system and reporting issues.
  • Track, verify and facilitate the input of unmeasured gas into VMA’s Known Gas Loss system.
  • Analyze and verify the accuracy of system line pack on applicable pipelines.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of best practices and procedures utilized across the team.
  • Provide timely response to measurement data inquiries, data reports per requests from internal and external customers.
  • Notify management of immediate and potential problems affecting the quality and timeliness of measurement data.
  • Manage measurement volume adjustments utilizing the guidelines in the individual pipeline tariffs, general terms & conditions, and contracts and department procedures.
  • Share technical and procedural knowledge and help train other team members as required.
  • Provide backup support for other team members as needed.
  • Routinely produce grammatically correct reports, summaries, policies, procedures, and memos.
  • Place priority on safety by attending safety meetings, acquiring knowledge of safety guidelines/goals, and working to ensure department and corporate safety guidelines are followed.
Position level, job title and pay will be determined by candidates’ level of experience and skill.Position RequirementsMinimum Requirements:Education:
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of engineering, business, or related physical sciences is required.
  • Previous experience in a related field/industry may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 3+ years of Natural Gas industry and natural gas measurement experience is preferred although not required.
Certifications, licenses, registrations:
  • Valid driver license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).
Competencies, skills, and abilities:
  • Measurement experience preferred, particularly in the areas of data collection, data editing, data analysis and system balancing and lost and unaccounted for investigation.
  • Well-developed math skills including the ability to understand and apply mathematical equations, formulas, fractions, percentages, etc.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and communicates effectively with team members, management, and other business groups. This includes conducting meetings effectively with a large and diverse set of internal customers.
  • Intermediate to advance proficiency levels for Microsoft Applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in query and report writing tools such as Access and SQL, preferred.
  • Self-motivated, takes personal responsibility for developing proficiencies needed to effectively perform job functions.
  • Effective in setting and meeting priorities and individual goals.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work individually and in a collaborative team environment.

  • Acquire an understanding of the corporation’s primary business models including the business functions of gathering, transporting, and processing of natural gas and liquids.
  • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed
