Keep reading.SUMMARYThe Director of Mountain Operations oversees, and is ultimately responsible for, all aspects of mountain operations departments, including administration, lift maintenance and operations, snowmaking, grooming, ski patrol, terrain parks, on-mountain events that involve mountain operations or race competitions, ambassadors, snow removal, roads and parking lot maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and trails maintenance and summer use.
The Director oversees planning and execution of on-mountain capital projects, including management of environmental permitting of development projects. The Director administers the resort’s environmental affairs and ensures compliance with the resort’s Water Quality Management Plan (WQMP) per State regulations. The Director also provides support to owners and management regarding land use planning, engineering, permitting, and development.
The Director demonstrates a strong focus on guest and staff safety, and is responsible for building and maintaining a strong team and an enjoyable atmosphere for guests.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (include the following, other duties may be assigned)
  • Direct management of department managers.
  • Coordinates oversight of daily operations of all departments and ensures a clear and active chain of communication between departments.
  • Provides communication direction and support for mountain operations departments to liaise with and distribute information to other departments throughout the resort. This includes updating and distributing the quick reference information booklets that Ambassadors and other departments use.
  • Prepare, implement and monitor operating and capital budgets for all mountain operations departments.
  • Support department managers with staff hiring, training and development.
  • Support department managers regarding regulatory compliance pertaining to mountain operations equipment and procedures.
  • Support parking and shuttle operations, as needed.
  • Coordinate snow removal with parking operations.
  • Manage the vehicle lease fleet including coordination with leasing agent(s), turnover of vehicles, and coordination with other resort departments regarding their transportation and equipment needs.
  • Manage the overall maintenance and repair of the resort’s vehicle and equipment fleet.
  • Manage state and federal water quality and related land use permits, compliance, strategic public and private relationships, and mitigation and remediation projects related to compliance with permits and regulations. Includes coordination with Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Natural Resources Council regarding the 2013 Settlement Agreement.
  • Act as the primary contact with the State Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation, and the Agency of Natural Resources regarding use of state forest lands, compliance with land use and environmental regulations, and projects on state land.
  • Assist with purchasing of materials and equipment for on- mountain operations departments and projects.
  • Manage the mid-week race training program in conjunction with head coach.
  • Act as primary contact with the Jay Peak Ski Club regarding terrain use, risk management, and staging of events.
  • Coordinate with the Events Department and others regarding winter on-mountain events and summer trail maintenance for biking, disc golf, hiking, Tram rides, etc.
  • Coordinate with the Risk Management Department for on-mountain events and regarding third-party documents and compliance with the resort’s risk management protocols.
  • Evaluate and implement modern ski resort equipment and technology including snowmaking, lifts, groomers, snow safety.
  • Other duties as assigned, which could be directly related, or unrelated to original position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervises team members in the Mountain Operations department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and hiring employees, creating and carrying out a thorough orientation and training process, planning, assigning and directing work, creating and maintaining a Services standards by which to appraise and evaluate individuals as well as rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Also, responsible for monitoring customer correspondence and facilitating escalated complaints or inquiries.QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to management.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.COMPUTER SKILLS
Must be proficient in use of all basic computer programs-Word/Excel/Email/Search.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must hold a valid State of Vermont Driver's License and be eligible for enrollment as a driver on Jay Peak’s Commercial Automobile policy.PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.This is a Winter Resort Area. It requires that work venues are varied, and in many cases include steep stairways, multi-level buildings and outdoor work areas, subject to very cold, sometimes wet or very sunny work sites. Some facilities are located at the base or bottom area and some are semi-remote and can only be reached by traveling via chair lift(s), skis or snowboards. Walking surfaces are frequently frozen, sloped and slippery. Proper footwear is a must, indoors and out.
