- The ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manual inspections.
- In-depth knowledge of tow truck systems, including winches, cables, and hydraulic lift mechanisms.
- Familiarity with vehicle electrical systems, as tow trucks often have complex electrical components.
- Proficiency in working with hydraulic systems, which are integral to many tow truck functions.
- Competence in welding and fabrication for repairs and modifications to tow truck components.
- A strong commitment to safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries during towing operations and repair work.
- The ability to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
- Competence in using computer-based diagnostic tools and software for analyzing and troubleshooting vehicle systems.
- Efficiently managing time to prioritize tasks and complete repairs promptly, especially in emergency towing situations.
- Tow truck mechanics often engage in physically demanding tasks, such as lifting heavy equipment and working in challenging conditions, so being in good physical shape is advantageous.
- Mastery of a wide range of tools, both hand tools and specialized equipment, used in towing and mechanical repairs.
- Repair and adjust clutches, starters, alternators, brakes, fuel, replace hydraulic cylinders, winch repairs, cable replacement, basic maintenance and cooling systems
- Strong communication skills
- Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required
- Knowledge of diesel and gas mechanics
- Mechanic work can be physically demanding, involving tasks such as lifting heavy parts and working in awkward positions. Good physical fitness is beneficial for the demands of the job.
